The Former Kuo-Kuang Bus Chao-Ma Transfer Station Before Demolition: A Reflection of Taiwan’s Long-Distance Bus Industry in Decline
Behind the tall construction fences stands the former Kuo-Kuang Bus Chao-Ma Transfer Station on Taiwan Boulevard in Taichung. After serving travelers for more than two decades, this once-familiar transportation landmark was closed before its demolition, marking the end of an era. For countless people in central Taiwan, it was the gateway for journeys north and south across the island, preserving generations of travel memories.
In recent years, Taiwan’s long-distance intercity bus industry has faced an unprecedented decline. The widespread adoption of high-speed rail, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, growing private car ownership, and changing commuting habits have all contributed to a sharp drop in passenger demand. Faced with rising operating costs and shrinking ridership, major bus operators have been forced to implement financial restructuring and cost-cutting measures. These have included reducing service frequencies, eliminating less profitable routes, and closing or downsizing terminals located on valuable urban land.
Situated beside the Taichung Interchange, one of the city’s most important transportation gateways, the Kuo-Kuang Chao-Ma Transfer Station officially ceased operations in early 2026 after the lease on the site expired. Services were relocated to a much smaller temporary station next door. Once the busiest highway bus hub in Taichung, the terminal was filled day and night with students returning home, commuters, and travelers waiting for coaches bound for every corner of Taiwan.
The disappearance of this historic terminal is more than a consequence of urban redevelopment. It symbolizes the structural transformation of Taiwan’s transportation system and the gradual fading of the golden age of intercity coach travel. Photographed shortly before demolition, this image stands as a poignant visual record of a turning point in Taiwan’s transportation history.
